Getting Started

Taking the First Step

Many people feel uncertain about where to begin when seeking support. You do not need to have everything figured out before making contact. Whether you have a specific concern or are simply wondering whether psychological support might be helpful, our team can help guide you through the process.

Choosing a Clinician

Clinicians consulting from May Health have different interests, experience, and approaches. Some people know exactly who they would like to see, while others appreciate guidance in finding a clinician whose experience and style may be a good fit.

Finding the right therapeutic relationship is important, and it is not unusual for needs or preferences to change over time. If you are unsure where to begin, or if a different clinician or service later seems more appropriate, our administration team can help guide you towards the most suitable options.

Referrals and Funding

You do not need a referral to access psychological services. Some people attend privately, while others are referred by their General Practitioner, Psychiatrist, or Paediatrician under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, which may provide access to Medicare rebates.

Depending on the clinician and the nature of the support required, services may also be funded privately, through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), or through other arrangements. Our administration team can provide general information regarding fees, referrals, and appointment availability.

What Happens Next?

Once you contact May Health, our administration team can answer questions, discuss availability, and assist you in arranging an appointment with the most appropriate clinician or service.

You do not need to prepare perfectly for your first appointment. Most first sessions involve getting to know one another, discussing what has brought you to seek support, and developing a shared understanding of what may be helpful. Some people arrive with a very clear concern, while others are simply aware that something does not feel quite right.

Together, you and your clinician will begin to clarify what matters most to you, identify goals, and consider the kinds of changes you hope to work towards. There is no expectation that you have everything figured out before you begin.
