Relationship Counselling

Relationships are central to our wellbeing, yet they can also be one of life’s greatest sources of stress, uncertainty, and emotional pain. They often invite us to better understand not only those around us, but also ourselves. Whether you are navigating challenges within a current relationship, recovering from separation, exploring patterns in dating, or wanting to strengthen your connection with a partner, relationship counselling provides a supportive space for reflection, understanding, and meaningful change.

At May Health, Relationship Counselling is available for both individuals and couples. Sessions are tailored to your unique circumstances and goals, recognising that every relationship is different. Counselling may focus on improving communication, navigating conflict, strengthening intimacy, developing healthier relationship patterns, or working through significant life transitions.

Who is Relationship Counselling for?

Relationship Counselling may be helpful if you are:

  • Wanting to improve communication within a relationship.
  • Experiencing ongoing conflict or feeling disconnected from your partner.
  • Navigating dating, separation, or other significant relationship transitions.
  • Wanting to better understand recurring relationship patterns.
  • Working through challenges relating to intimacy, trust, or emotional connection.
  • Seeking to strengthen boundaries, confidence, or self-understanding within relationships.
  • Looking for support as an individual or together as a couple.

Whether you attend on your own or with your partner, counselling provides an opportunity to better understand yourself, your relationships, and the patterns that shape them.

Attending as an Individual

Many people attend relationship counselling on their own. You do not need to be in a relationship, or attend with a partner, to benefit from counselling.

Individual sessions provide an opportunity to explore relationship patterns, communication, attachment, boundaries, dating, separation, family relationships, intimacy, and other experiences that may be affecting your wellbeing. Together, you and your counsellor will work towards developing greater self-understanding, healthier ways of relating, and more fulfilling relationships.

Sessions are tailored to your individual goals and circumstances, recognising that every person’s experiences and relationships are unique.

Attending as a Couple

Couples counselling provides a supportive space for partners to better understand one another, strengthen communication, navigate conflict, and build healthier, more connected relationships. Sessions are tailored to each couple’s unique strengths, challenges, and goals.

To develop a thoughtful understanding of each relationship, counselling typically begins with a structured assessment process:

  • Session One: A joint session to explore your relationship, identify concerns, and discuss your goals for counselling.
  • Session Two: An individual session with one partner to better understand personal history, relationship experiences, and individual perspectives.
  • Session Three: An individual session with the other partner, providing the same opportunity for reflection and exploration.
  • Session Four: A joint feedback and planning session to develop a shared understanding of relationship patterns and establish goals for ongoing counselling.

Following this process, ongoing joint sessions are tailored to the needs and priorities of each couple.

Areas Commonly Explored

Relationship Counselling may support individuals and couples experiencing:

  • Communication difficulties and recurring conflict.
  • Feeling disconnected or struggling with emotional closeness.
  • Dating and developing healthy relationships.
  • Relationship transitions, including separation or divorce.
  • Trust, betrayal, and rebuilding relationships.
  • Boundaries, self-esteem, and confidence within relationships.
  • Attachment patterns and understanding recurring relationship dynamics.
  • Intimacy and sexual wellbeing.
  • Emotional regulation within relationships.
  • ADHD and neurodiversity within relationships.

Every relationship is different. Counselling is tailored to your unique experiences, strengths, and goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach.

Therapeutic Approach

Greer takes a thoughtful, collaborative, and evidence-informed approach to relationship counselling. She recognises that every individual and every relationship is unique, and tailors counselling to the specific needs, strengths, and goals of those she works with.

Her work draws on a range of evidence-based approaches, including:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)
  • The Gottman Method
  • Imago Relationship Therapy
  • Attachment Theory
  • Psychoeducation and practical relationship skill-building

Rather than applying a single model, Greer integrates these approaches to help individuals and couples develop greater understanding, strengthen communication, and build healthier, more connected relationships.

ADHD-Informed Relationship Counselling

Greer has a particular interest in ADHD and neurodiversity and understands the ways these experiences can influence communication, emotional regulation, intimacy, self-esteem, and relationship dynamics.

ADHD is not a requirement for attending Relationship Counselling. However, where ADHD or other forms of neurodiversity are part of an individual’s or couple’s experience, counselling incorporates an understanding of the unique strengths and challenges these experiences can bring to relationships.

As part of May Health’s multidisciplinary ADHD Clinical Services, Greer works alongside our broader team to provide integrated, evidence-informed support for individuals, couples, and families affected by ADHD.
