ADHD Assessment

Adult ADHD Assessment

Adult ADHD assessment at May Health is provided by Dr Emilie Staehr (General Practitioner).

As a General Practitioner with experience in psychological medicine, Dr Staehr undertakes assessment using a structured and methodical approach, with careful attention to developmental history, current functioning, and broader medical and psychological context.

Our Approach

Dr Staehr was part of the inaugural South Australian training cohort involved in the development and delivery of GP education in ADHD assessment. This work informs a careful and systematic diagnostic process.

Assessment involves consideration of:

  • Developmental history
  • Current presentation and functional impact
  • Broader psychological and medical factors
  • Alternative explanations where relevant

Dr Staehr’s approach is informed by both clinical training and personal lived experience of ADHD, contributing to a nuanced understanding of how ADHD may present across the lifespan.

The focus is on careful formulation rather than speed.

Assessment Process

Assessment is usually completed over two consultations.

First Consultation

The first appointment is a comprehensive clinical interview. This includes exploration of developmental background, current patterns of attention and organisation, functional impact across work, study, and relationships, and screening for other contributing factors.

If ADHD appears unlikely at this stage, a second consultation may not be required.

Between Consultations

Where ADHD remains a possibility, structured questionnaires or additional information may be requested.

Second Consultation

The second appointment involves review of all available information and application of current diagnostic criteria. A diagnosis may or may not be made following this process.

Where ADHD is confirmed, discussion of treatment options may occur during this consultation. This can include consideration of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, depending on individual needs and preferences.

Not all individuals who undergo assessment will meet criteria for ADHD. Where appropriate, alternative explanations or recommendations may be discussed.

Consultations are conducted in a calm and confidential clinical setting.

Ongoing Care and Support

For individuals who receive a diagnosis of ADHD, ongoing care may include:

  • Ongoing medical management, including review of pharmacological treatment where appropriate

  • Psychological & Coaching interventions
  • Access to structured group programs
  • Educational sessions and webinars
  • Relationship-focused programs for couples

Not all individuals require all elements of care. Recommendations are individualised.

Undertaking assessment within May Health allows for continuity. ADHD assessment sits within a broader clinical framework that includes medical, psychological, educational, and relational supports. Individuals who wish to access further support can do so within the same service.

Fees & Access

Each assessment consultation is scheduled for 60 minutes to allow for a comprehensive review.

The fee is $500 per consultation, with a Medicare rebate of approximately $200 per visit. A referral is not required to access this service.

If ADHD is determined to be unlikely following the first consultation, a second appointment will not be required.
